![]() Gene Bilbrew (born 1923, died 1974) was also known by his name-spelled-backwards pseudonym "Eneg." Bilbrew had an incredibly powerful presence on the page -- with a distinct shaping to the muscles, a specific cruelty of the eyes, and a uniquely detailed vision of the darkness of forbidden sexuality. Originally from Los Angeles, he grew up wanting to be a jazz singer, but gave it up to pursue another of his talents, art. Influenced by his friend, illustrator Bill Alexander, and after a short stint as a legit comic-book illustrator in NYC in the early 1950s, Bilbrew ventured into the world of Post-War Fetish illustration -- working for Irving Klaw, bringing to life Lenny Burtman's EXOTIQUE and crafting the most lurid paperback covers of the 60s and 70s. It was Bilbrew who introduced Ward and Stanton into the world of Fetish Illustration. Unfortunately, he may have lived too close to the dangerous life he depicted -- and regrettably Gene Bilbrew died hooked on heroin in back of an adult book shop where he was living. While photographs of Bilbrew are scarce, there are some characters on some of his book covers which seem close to self-portrait, a smallish African-American man with a thin moustache. New titles will be added as they become available. |
